The Costar 9SIR uses a stable, low-power carbon monoxide detection technology. The carbon monoxide sensor in the CO detector uses a solid-state infrared reservoir (SIR) sensor. This biotechnology based sensor (biomimetric) mimics hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in blood. An optical sensor responds proportionally to CO sensed in the environment. Light emitting diodes and photodiode sensors sense the amount of transmitted light through the optical sensor. When monitored carbon monoxide reaches a dangerous level, the detector sounds an alarm.
