The Vermont Soapworks' Soap-Making Process:
Vermont Soap is made using a modern version of a two hundred year old method developed
in France to please King Louis XIV. Oils of palm, coconut, and olive are blended
and mixed at precise temperatures with an alkali solution. (Modern alkali is made
by running electricity through salt water.) The batch is mixed for hours, thickening
slowly. When the batch is ready, botanical concentrates and organic herbs are added.
Each batch of handmade soap is then poured into oil soaked wooden molds and kept
warm for 3 days.
As the handmade soap solidifies, alkali salts rise to the top like cream. On the
fourth day the handmade soap, now solid in brick form, is removed from the molds,
and skimmed of all alkali salts (a major irritant to sensitive skin). The soap is
left in ecobricks or cut into individual bars then cured for an additional 21 days.
Often lasting about twice as long as conventional bars, Vermont Soapworks soap is
extremely moisturizing and soothing to your skin.
Herbal extracts called essential oils are added to enhance and individualize the
soaps for various skin types. For example:
- Peppermint Magic and Citrus Sunrise contain natural astringents for normal to oily
skin.
- Oatmeal Lavender relaxes pores and is excellent for dry sensitive skin.
- Honey & Cornmeal combines the exfoliating benefits of cornmeal, the moisturizing
properties of honey, and the natural astringent properties of clove oil.
- Woodspice is naturally deodorizing and stimulating for normal to oily skin.
- Oats 'N Aloe Unscented combines oatmeal with aloe for a mild, hypoallergenic soap
perfect for very sensitive skin.
Vermont Soapworks ecobricks of soap are your best value and ecologically superior
as there is no additional paper to remove and dispose of. Weighing about 3 pounds,
each brick is prescored into 12 bars and cuts easily with a knife. Each brick weighs
about 4 pounds in the mold: weigh drops after the soap dries.
