John Sterling 1120 Series Window Guards are security guards for use only on single hung or double hung style windows. 1120 series guards are permanently fixed (do not open) and cannot be removed to wash windows. 1120 series are New York City Approved #HDWG 05-87-86 and HDWG-04-93-09 for non-sleeping rooms. Never install an 1120 series window guard in a window accessing a fire escape. Space between bars is 4.5 inches. Maximum allowable opening in NYC is 4.5 inches between the first bar. Install a window stop so that the window does not open more than 4.5 inches above the top bar. Check with your local building inspector for local code requirements if you do not live in New York City.

Double hung windows have 2 separate window panels, each slide up and down in its separate track. Both panels can be slid to the center so that ventilation comes from both the top and the bottom of the window. Usually, only the bottom panel opening is protected. Single hung windows have one moving panel, the bottom panel.

For technical assistance, contact Safe Home Products at 877-358-0900 or e-mail us at sales@safehomeproducts.com with the number and type of windows to be guarded and the dimensions of openings to be protected. We suggest that list each room where guards are to be installed. Then list measurements and location of each window in that room For example: living room, 35 inches wide by 20 inches high, South window near piano.

1)  Measure the inside width of the window frame. If several windows are within the same wooden frame, note that as well.(Figure 1-1)

2) Measure window frame depth where 1120 guards will be mounted. (inside right and
left sides of window frame).
  • If the depth of the window frame measures less than 3/4 inches, the guard will need to be mounted on the outside of the window frame (on the window trim or wall). Add at least 1-1/2 inches to the inside window frame measurement. (The extra 1-1/2 inches is the width of both side posts)

3) After accurately measuring the window opening, find width measurement below and click on the link.
