Safety Siren Radon Gas Detector & Radon Monitor
Why Test for Radon Gas?
Why should you test for Radon Gas?
Visit our information links to learn
details of the Radon Gas hazard.
But the bottom line is:
- The US Surgeon General identified Radon as the
second leading cause of lung cancer.
- The EPA estimated that Radon is responsible
for over 25,000 cancer deaths annually, 10 times greater than from Carbon Monoxide.
- Radon is a natural radioactive gas formed by uranium decaying in soil, rock,
and water. It is tasteless, odorless and invisible. Radon levels outdoors are typically
about 0.4pCi/L. Indoor levels above 4.0 pCi/L are considered a health threat over the long
term, that may result in lung cancer.
- Buildings can have higher radon levels than the outdoors because of
the vacuum effect a building has on the ground on which it sits. Air pressure inside
homes is usually lower than air pressure in the soil around a home's foundation. So
air is drawn from the soil beneath a slab or through basement walls and floor via
cracks and mixes with air within the home. Over time, radon gas can accumulate
to dangerous levels within your home.
- Radon levels fluctuate depending upon factors such as opening and closing
windows and doors to variations in outgassing of radon from the ground.
- Radon gas levels in a home can vary on a daily basis between safe and hazardous, cancer
causing levels. Continuous radon testing with an electronic radon detector allows you
to note the variances.
- IMPORTANT: For Radon levels greater than 4.0 pCi/L
take action. Contact a certified Radon Mitigation specialist
(often found under Radon Mitigation in the Yellow Pages) or contact your
State's Radon Expert for help with mitigation.
State contacts can be found via our Links Page.

Newest Version: Safety Siren Radon Detector PRO 3 (SM-RAD-PRO3)
Upgrades from the PRO 2 Model are:
- EPA Evaluated.
- Radon reading to the nearest tenth, (no longer rounded up to a whole number)
- Alarm sounds if either long term or short term is above 4 pCi/L (alarm can still be muted)
- With these few exceptions, the basic circuitry of Pro 2 and Pro 3 is identical.
The Pro Series 3 Radon Gas Detector is the only radon gas detector on the market designed for use by the
homeowner. This Series III Radon Detector was evaluated by US EPA and meets performance criteria for the continuous
radon protocol. Homeowner can monitor the radon level in their
home withn an easy to read digital display. With this radon detector, the homeowner can monitor radon levels
both with short-term
and long-term averages. The Radon Gas Monitor must be plugged in for 48 hours before the first reading is displayed.
About Radon:
- Radon is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of uranium in the
soil. When allowed to accumulate to high levels, it can be hazardous to long-term health.
- The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
Only cigarette smoking causes more lung cancer deaths.
- Radon levels in a home can vary greatly over a one-month period going from safe levels to
dangerous levels and back to safe. Humidity, temperature, and season of the year are major variables.
- The EPA currently states that corrective action should be taken if radon levels exceed 4 pCi/L (4
Pico-Curies per liter) on a long-term basis.
- Radon gas is impossible to detect without the use of sensitive test equipment.
Features:
- EVALUATED BY THE US EPA.
- Meets performance criteria for the continuous radon protocol by EPA.
- Numeric LED display range of 0.0 to 999.9 shows the level of radon gas in pCi/L on a short-term
or long-term basis.
- Short-term readings display the average radon levels over the past 7 days.
- Long-term readings display the average radon levels since powered-up or last reset with a maximum
reading time of 5 years.
- Audible alarm sounds if the long-term average reaches 4 pCi/L or greater.
- Samples air continuously with the display updated every hour.
- Conducts a failsafe self test every 24 hours with an error code displayed if there is a failure.
- Menu button that controls 4 functions.
- Allows the user to switch between the short-term and long-term display,
indicated by a green LED illuminated next to the S (short-term) or L (long-term).
- Allows the user to conduct a manual test of the detector.
- Allows the user to mute or reactivate the audible alarm if the detector is in an alarm state.
- Allows the user to clear and reset the memory of the detector to begin new readings.
- Audible alarm sounds if:
- The long term radon measurement reaches 4 pCi/L or greater.
- The short term radon measurement stays above the 4 pCi/L for 30 consecutive days.
- 10 foot power cord allows the detector to be placed away from walls, windows and doors.
Specifications:
- Sensor: Ionization Chamber
- Full scale reading: 999.9 pCi/L
- Short term: Average radon reading over past 7 days.
- Long term: Average radon reading from time of last reset. Maximum sampling time of 5 years.
Detector automatically resets after 5 years of accumulated radon data.
- Audible Alarm: 85db at 10cm. Beeps every hour if short or long term radon levels are 4pCi/L or greater. May
be muted by user.
- Accuracy: +/- 20% pCi/L
- NO Rounding: NOW DISPLAYS TO THE TENTH.
- Averaging Freqency: Levels will be updated on the display every hour.
- Continuous Monitoring: Display updated hourly.
- Lock Tab: Screw through tab; detector is tamper proof.
- Operating Environment: 0° C (32° F) to 70° C (158° F)
- Storage Environment: -20° C (-4° F) to 85° C (185° F)
- Dimensions: 4.7" x 3.1" x 2.1"
- Power Source:
- Input: 120v AC/60Hz at 9 Watts
- Output: 18v DC/200mA
- Sensor Voltage:250VDC
- Weight: 8 ounces
- Each Pro 3 radon detector has a final accuracy test by testing against a high end SUN nuclear radon unit.
- Note: The Pro 3 Radon Monitor requires a 48 hours sampling of air before first accurate
reading is displayed.
- EVALUATED BY THE US EPA. Evaluated by US EPA and meets performance criteria for the continuous radon protocol.
- One year limited manufacturer's warranty.
